Donal Ware always knew he wanted to be on the radio. He always knew he wanted to be in sports. Growing up, listening to Johnny Holiday calling games for the University of Maryland and Frank Herzog calling games for the then Washington Redskins, he realized he wanted to be a play-by-play broadcaster.
He enrolled at Morgan State University in Baltimore and was taken under the wing of MSU play-by-play man Lamont Germany (who is still broadcasting games to this day).
In the beginning, Ware would pay his own way to go on the road and provide analysis during football and basketball broadcasts. In his final year at Morgan State, he became the halftime host during Bears broadcasts. During basketball games, he occasionally was the color commentator. And occasionally, when Morgan State games weren't being broadcast, Germany would work with Donal, allowing him to be the play-by-play man and hone his craft.
Ware's dreams of being a play-by-play man took a slight turn
- that's what he thought - when he became the sports information director at North Carolina A&T State University. It actually turned out to be part of his career path. When the regular play-by-play broadcaster for basketball had to leave the country for a couple of weeks, Ware was called upon and handled play-by-play for a few A&T basketball games. During his time at A&T, he even called the very first broadcast of A&T baseball on the radio, a doubleheader against UNCG. He called the games by himself!
More recently, Ware has been the Play-By-Play Voice of North Carolina A&T football, including during perhaps the greatest time in the history of A&T football that saw the Aggies win four MEAC titles, Four Celebration Bowls, and saw the Aggies transition from the MEAC to the Big South and from the Big South to the CAA. He has also been the Play-by-Play Voice for the North Carolina A&T women's basketball team and has called some A&T men's games as well.
Along the way in his career, he established the NCCU Sports Network and became the play-by-play voice of the network in NCCU's first year in Division I. He has also served as the Play-by-Play Voice of Shaw basketball and called the game when the Lady Bears won the NCAA national championship.
Ware aims to paint a picture for the listener. He does much more than give time and score. His descriptions can make you feel as if you are watching the game.
In addition to his play-by-play duties, Ware is the founder and host of the national BOXTOROW, which has become more than a radio show. It has become an institution, well respected across the broadcast landscape. The radio show airs on SiriusXM including SiriusXM College Sports Radio as well as on radio stations in over 30 markets across the country. He has broadcast from Super Bowls, NBA All-Star Weekends, NBA Finals, MLB All-Star Games, U.S. Open, Daytona 500, and many other events. The guests he has interviewed over the years include the likes of Kevin Durant, Serena Williams, Snoop Dogg, Michael B. Jordan, Joss Stone, Kevin Hart, Jadakiss and the list goes on and on and on.
He is also the founder and host of Radio BOSS, another nationally syndicated show focusing on sports, entertainment, and pop culture.
